Does Zevia Break a Fast?

Zevia is a low calorie soda, but it doesn’t mean that it’s safe to drink while Intermittent Fasting. Here’s what you need to know.

Does Zevia Break a Fast?

Zevia is a zero sugar, zero calorie soda option. The sweet flavor from Zevia comes exclusively from stevia leaf extract. When determining whether or not something will break a fast, you need to consider if the food or drink will cause an insulin response. Insulin is our storing hormone and when it’s released, it causes the body to shift out of a state of fat burning and breaks a fast. As Zevia does not contain any carbohydrates or protein (the main food sources that spike insulin), it technically will not break a fast.

However, it’s important to note that for some people, sweet flavor can stimulate further sugar cravings. So sipping on a highly sweet tasting drink, like Zevia, might be making it more difficult to avoid other sweet treats later in the day.

Zevia also includes about 45 mg of caffeine per can. If you’re looking to achieve a weight loss goal with Intermittent Fasting, it’s important to avoid caffeine after 2pm (or 12pm if you’re caffeine sensitive). Caffeine can hinder sleep quality and poor quality sleep is directly tied to weight gain around the belly.(1) So if you choose to have Zevia, make sure to not have it too late in the evening in order to maximize your weight loss progress with Intermittent Fasting
